Psyllium is a bulk-forming laxative used to treat cats (and humans). Psyllium is a seed that absorbs water and swells in the intestine to relieve intestinal disturbances.

  1. Function

    • Psyllium treats constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome.

    Types

    • Psyllium is available in tablets or loose powder form (such as Metamucil).

    Side Effects

    • Psyllium may produce more flatulence than usual but generally produces no other side effects.

    Benefits

    • Psyllium is a natural way to deal with feline constipation or bowel problems without having to use harsh laxatives or enemas.

    Warning

    • Psyllium should not be used on any cat experiencing a blockage, and should only be used under the guidance of a veterinarian. Seek veterinary attention immediately if your cat experiences constipation as it may be fatal if untreated.
