Infected Eye in a Kitten

Eye infections are a very common problem for kittens, as their eyes are exposed to a number of bacteria that their immune systems are not yet strong enough to fight off. The problem is easily treated by a veterinarian, however.

Symptoms

Redness of the eye, watery eyes and swelling are symptoms of a mild eye infection. Puss, sealed eyelids and foul odors from the eye are signs of a more severe infection.

Causes

Kittens may pick up an eye infection from their litter mates or mother, from their environment or from other infected animals.

Diagnosis

Your veterinarian performs a physical and ocular (eye) examination of your kitten, as well as taking a medical history, to diagnose an eye infection.

Treatment

Eye drops and cleaning the kitten's eyes with saline solution are common treatments for eye infections.

Warning

Immediate treatment is necessary for a kitten's eye infection to ensure your kitten's vision is not negatively affected.
