What Is the Meaning of a Dog's Dry Nose? thumbnail
One of a few conditions typically causes nose dryness in dogs.

Canines are known for their cold and wet noses. While dogs with dry noses are considered unusual by many, this symptom is not always a sign of poor health. Nose dryness in dogs can be caused by a few conditions.

  1. Allergies

    • Nose dryness in canines is most often caused by allergies, with an allergy to plastics being the most common. Replacing plastic food and water bowls with stainless steel containers typically resolves this problem.

    Sunburn

    • Although most dog breeds are covered with hair, these animals are still subject to sunburn. The nose is often affected by sunburn, causing periods of dryness.

    Injuries

    • Untreated injuries to the nose sometimes result in a dry nose in canines. Injuries with scabs, sores or nasal discharge should be treated by a veterinarian immediately.

    Autoimmune Disease

    • Extended periods of nose dryness in canines are sometimes caused by the autoimmune disease pemphigus foliaceus. Additional signs of this condition include blisters on the nose and feet.

    Considerations

    • Seek veterinary help if your dog's nose is dry for an extended period of time. Treatment for this symptom varies based upon the underlying cause for the condition.
