Why Is Paraben Bad? thumbnail
Parabens are in 90 percent of the skin care products we use.

Parabens can be found in cosmetics, moisturizers, shaving gels, shampoos, toothpaste and many skin care products. Their safety is highly debated--some experts say they are not harmful in small doses and others warn to avoid them completely. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Significance

    • Parabens can be found in 90 percent of all skin care products and cosmetics. They are cheap and widely available, which is why they are used.

    Types

    • Parabens are chemicals, such as methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl. Studies suggest they may interfere with the body's endocrine system, which is made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones.

    Theories/Speculation

    • Parabens can imitate the estrogen hormone, influencing high levels in the body, which may be linked to breast cancer. Studies have shown that parabens increased breast cancer proliferation and have been found in breast tumor samples.

    Warning

    • While studies show that amounts of parabens that increase breast cancer proliferation are thousands of times beyond the amount found in skin care products. They also show that parabens can accumulate in body tissue over time.

    Considerations

    • A 2002 study shows that parabens significantly reduced sperm counts in mice. However, the amount studied was one hundred times more than what is used in the average skin care product.

    Potential

    • Much like the patches used to quit smoking, parabens enter your bloodstream when applied to your skin. When taken in through the bloodstream, a body can receive higher concentrations, up to 10 times the amount than when taking it orally. Additionally, those with sensitive skin should avoid parabens because it often causes allergic reactions, irritation and rashes.
