TOEFL Exam Information
The TOEFL, or Test of English as Foreign Language, exam is a type of standardized test used to assess non-native English speakers' use and understanding of written and spoken English.

The examination is designed and administered by Educational Testings Services (ETS), which also designs and administers a number of other standardized examinations, including the SAT and GRE (Graduate Record Examination).
Formats

The TOEFL is available, reports Exam English, in a paper-based format and computer-based format (in some locations). The tests are given in testing centers and the format availability is determined by the capabilities of the individual centers.

Components

There are four components to each format that, while titled differently, cover the same essential skills. The skill areas tested are reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Uses

The primary purpose of the examination is to facilitate entrance into a college or university that uses English as the primary teaching language. It is also used on a more limited basis by government and licensing agencies to assess proficiency with the English language.
Cost

The cost of the examination varies from country to country, but, as of 2010, the fee is set at $160 for the paper-based exam and $170 for computer-based testing in the United States.
