Definition of a Hydrogel

A hydrogel is a type of dressing used for wound care. Hydrogel products comes in three main forms and help prevent the external contamination of a wound.

  1. Description

    • Hydrogel wound care dressings are usually made of a clear and viscous gel such as glycerine. In addition to the gel form in a tube, hydrogel can also come in hydrogel sheets and hydrogel gauze.

    Function

    • Hydrogel is used on wounds that are substantially healed. It is beneficial for the protection of the wound bed during the healing process.

    Benefits

    • A hydrogel wound dressing helps the healing process by keeping the wound moist. Additionally, it aids in the removal of dead tissue from the wound.

    Considerations

    • According to the Ohio State University (OSU), hydrogel wound dressings should not be used if you develop a rash or experience skin irritation. The dressing should be removed as soon as the wound is healed.

    Caution

    • The OSU cautions that hydrogel products must be kept in a clean plastic bag at room temperature.
