Male Betta Fish Information

Male betta fish are popular pets due to their wide variety of colors, patterns and fin types. Also known as Siamese fighting fish, the male betta is known for its combative, aggressive nature and striking beauty.

Types

Fin formations define and separate male bettas. There are approximately 13 known fin variations.

Colors

Male bettas come in a wide variety of vibrant colors and impressive patterns. Betta patterns can be polka dotted, butterflied, peppered, streaked or marbled. Selective breeding creates new patterns.

Care

Male bettas are carnivorous fish. Several dry pellet foods specifically made for bettas exist, and the fish are often fed frozen bloodworms. Keep bettas in warm, fresh water, with a temperature ranging from 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Features

Male betta fish have a special organ known as the labyrinth that allows them to breathe in both water and air, on a restricted basis. Bettas can survive longer than the average fish outside of water due to this special organ.

Considerations

Male bettas are extremely territorial fish and will fight to the death should they encounter another male betta. Female bettas can live with male bettas as long as the tank is large enough to provide ample hiding places for the female to escape the male.
