When people think of knitting, they commonly picture yarn manipulated by two long needles. However, different methods of knitting exist, among them loom board knitting. Loom boards are rectangles with a row of pegs on each of the longer sides.

  1. Design

    • The two long sides of the loom board are called rakes. The board is held so that one rake is on the bottom and the other on the top. In addition to the pegs along the top and bottom rake, a single holding peg is located on one short side.

    Type

    • Loom boards are used to create double knit fabric. Double knit fabrics are reversible, while single knits have a wrong side.

    What Can Be Made

    • You can knit a variety of textiles with a loom board, such as hats, scarves, dishcloths and even sweaters.

    Knitting Gauge

    • The gauge, or number of stitches per inch, is determined on a loom board by the distance between each peg as well as the distance between the top and bottom rakes. The greater the distance between rakes and pegs, the bigger the gauge.

    Stitches

    • Knitters use several stitches on a loom board. The most basic is known as casting on, in which the yarn is wrapped around alternating top and bottom pegs.
