Weightlifting & Abdominal Pain

Weightlifting has benefits but also risks. One of the risks is incurring an injury. Abdominal pain can come in different variations, and treating it should take precedent over the workout.

  1. Types

    • Abdominal pain can come from several sources. It can occur from a muscle pull during weightlifting, symptoms of food poisoning or indigestion, or a genetic condition such as Chron's disease (see Reference 1).

    Reaction

    • If you experience abdominal pain during weightlifting, stop immediately. If the pain is intense or lingers, see a medical professional.

    Significance

    • Abdominal pain associated in weightlifting is typically a muscle strain, usually involving the rectus abdominus (See Reference 2).

    Identification

    • Symptoms of a muscle strain typically include tenderness and inflammation in the abdominal area, sudden sharp pain, and an increase in pain when performing crunch-type exercises (see Reference 2).

    Prevention/Solution

    • Stretching the abdominal muscles will decrease the chances of injury. If an injury has occurred, rest until the pain subsides or apply heat (see Reference 2).
