Michigan Seat Belt Law
Michigan law requires all drivers to wear a seat belt. Additionally, all children under 16 years of age must wear a seat belt. If a police officer spots you not wearing a safety belt, you can be issued a ticket or a fine.

Exemptions

Under Michigan law, you are not required to wear a seat belt if you are driving (or are a passenger in) a bus, motorcycle or moped.
Front Seat

The driver and any passengers in the front seat must wear a seat belt.

Children

All children under 4 years old must be buckled into a child restraint system in the back seat. Also, children between the ages of 4 and 8 and shorter than 4-foot-9 must be in a restraint system in the back seat.
Teenagers

Any person 16 years old or younger must wear a seat belt.
Numbers Game

If there are more people in the vehicle than there are seat belts and all of the belts are being used properly, the driver is not in violation.
Violation

You can be pulled over and fined if a police officer spots you without a seat belt on.
