Wisconsin Child Safety Seat Belt Law
Wearing a seat belt and having children properly restrained in a car seat keeps the occupants safe when riding in a vehicle. Each state has different laws for the use of seat belts and car seats with children. Knowing a state's laws will help avoid costly tickets.

Infant

Infants who are under the age of one year and weigh less than 20 pounds must ride in a rear facing car seat.
Toddler

A forward facing car seat is required for all children who are at least one year of age to the age of four. The child must weigh at least 20 pounds but no more than 40 pounds.

Booster Seat

A booster seat is required for a child who is older than four but under the age of eight. They must be between 40 and 80 pounds and less than 57 inches tall.
Exemption

If a car has a backseat, the car seat must be placed in the backseat. Children who cannot ride in a booster seat, due to physical or medical conditions, are exempt from the booster safety seat and seat belt laws.
Warning

There is no longer a provision that allows a child to be removed from a car seat or seat belt, while the car is moving for personal needs such as feeding or changing.
Penalty

The penalties for driving with a child under the age of four, who is not properly restrained, is $30 to $75. For children ages 4 to 8 the fine is $10 to $25 and children ages 8 to 16 the fine is $10.
