Ghost Towns & Tourism in New Mexico

New Mexico is a vibrant state that offers many tourist attractions. The state once hosted many outlaws of the Wild West, including Billy the Kid. New Mexico is rich in ghost towns and lore. According to the state tourism website, New Mexico has 16 ghost towns and 8 former movie sets.

  1. Elizabethtown

    • According to legend, Charles Kennedy offered his home as lodging for visitors, murdered them and stole their belongings. Upon hearing of the story, Clay Allison, a local rancher, formed a group to search the home, where a vast number of bones were found.

    Old Mesilla

    • Old Mesilla is another ghost town in Mexico, once inhabited by the affluent Maes family. According to local legend, the ghosts of Armando and Inez, a young couple, continue to haunt the Maes' former home.

    La Fonda Hotel

    • The La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe has been destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions. According to local legend, ghosts of visitors who died at the hotel still haunt the building.

    Roswell

    • In the early 1940s, a rancher living in Roswell discovered a flying disc on his property, which many believed was a UFO. Upon inspection, the government contended that the discovery was merely a weather balloon.

    International UFO Museum and Research Center

    • Visitors to Roswell may tour the International UFO Museum and Research Center, which opened in the early 1990s. The museum aims to provide an unbiased view of the Roswell incident so that visitors may decide what really happened.
