Define Mobile Application

A mobile application or app is software that can run on a mobile device such as a cell phone or MP3 player that will allow the device to perform specific tasks that are typically restricted to PCs.

  1. Devices

    • PDAs, such as Palm Pilots, and smartphones, such as Blackberry, are all capable of downloading and using apps. Some MP3 players can utilize apps as well.

    Locations

    • You can download apps from the web via app stores. Check out pocketgear.com, for one example, to see a wide variety of applications available for download to your mobile device.

    Functions

    • There is a wide array of apps for various tasks. One of the most common is a web browser, allowing you to access the Internet from your phone (service is required). Other popular apps include Facebook and games.

    Development

    • Because they perform one dedicated task, it has become common for a person with an idea for an app to create and deploy it with little or no training. There are user-friendly programs that can help the average user develop an app for personal use or for the marketplace.

    Industry

    • There has been a greater demand for mobile apps in the last few years. As the popularity of mobile devices has grown, so has the desire for the device to do more tasks to suit busy lifestyles.
