Dog Tenosynovitis

As a pet owner, you may find that your dog can develop a variety of health problems just like humans. Health problems can worsen over time as your dog gets older, and your pet may develop joint inflammation, and possibly tenosynovitis.

  1. Identification

    • Tenosynovitis is an inflammation of the fluid-filled tissue around a tendon usually attached to a limb.

    Symptoms

    • Tenosynovitis is characterized by pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the inflamed joint. An orthopedic examination by a veterinarian is necessary as tenosynovitis can often be misdiagnosed due to similar symptoms.

    Potential

    • Tenosynovitis usually occurs in dogs that are medium to large in size, or older animals. Also, excess weight can add pressure to the joints and limbs causing inflammation and pain.

    Treatment

    • Dogs with tenosynovitis are usually restricted from exercising and are treated with an anti-inflammatory prescription. In acute cases, steroids may be used and cortisone is injected into the tendon, and also surgery may be needed in severe situations.

    Prevention

    • Prevention of tenosynovitis is mainly controlled through weight-control and proper exercise, to keep excess weight off of over-worked joints.
