What Is Cherry Eye for a Chihuahua?
The chihuahua is one of the most popular breeds of dogs. Unfortunately, they often suffer from congenital conditions which can worry owners and cost a lot of money to fix. A common problem to watch out for is called cherry eye.
-
Appearance
-
Cherry eye refers to the appearance of a chihuahua's eye when the membrane of their third eyelid becomes visible. The membrane looks like a red mass in the corner of the eye.
Symptoms
-
Because the tear gland in the membrane is unable to work properly, the dog's eye will often be dry. There can also be a discharge from the eye.
-
Cause
-
The membrane slips out of place because of weak connective tissue. As the condition normally occurs in the first year of life, many veterinarians feel it is genetic.
Nonsurgical Treatments
-
If the gland is not inflamed, the condition is more of a cosmetic concern, and owners may wish to avoid or postpone surgery. Eye drops and antibiotic ointments may help the condition resolve, at least temporarily.
Surgical Treatments
-
The most effective treatment is to have a veterinary ophthalmologist create a new pocket for the membrane. Or the membrane can be stitched in place under anesthetic; while less expensive, this procedure isn't always permanent.
