What Is Hydrogen Sulfide Bacteria?
Sulfur bacteria, or sulfate-reducing bacteria, are naturally-occurring bacteria that use the sulfur in decaying organic matter as an energy source. Hydrogen sulfide, a foul-smelling gas, is produced as a byproduct. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Harmless
-
Sulfur bacteria are harmless in themselves, but hydrogen sulfide in a water system can be very annoying. It is toxic in high concentrations.
Slime
-
The bacteria can cause a white, gray, black or reddish brown slime that can clog pipes, wells and plumbing.
-
Other bacteria
-
Sulfur bacteria can encourage the growth of other bacteria, such as iron bacteria.
Source
-
Sulfur bacteria can be present in a well or its distribution system, and/or in water treatment devices, such as a water softener or water heater.
