Sulfur bacteria in a water system can lead to corrosion of the pipes.

Sulfur bacteria, or sulfate-reducing bacteria, are naturally-occurring bacteria that use the sulfur in decaying organic matter as an energy source. Hydrogen sulfide, a foul-smelling gas, is produced as a byproduct. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Harmless

    • Sulfur bacteria are harmless in themselves, but hydrogen sulfide in a water system can be very annoying. It is toxic in high concentrations.

    Slime

    • The bacteria can cause a white, gray, black or reddish brown slime that can clog pipes, wells and plumbing.

    Other bacteria

    • Sulfur bacteria can encourage the growth of other bacteria, such as iron bacteria.

    Source

    • Sulfur bacteria can be present in a well or its distribution system, and/or in water treatment devices, such as a water softener or water heater.

    Corrosion

    • Hydrogen sulfide can also corrode pipes in the indoor plumbing system and/or the water distribution system for a well.
