What Do Staffing Companies Do? thumbnail
Finding the right candidate

The primary role of staffing agencies is to find the best match between candidates and employer openings. Staffing agencies hire recruiters, who screen applicants and act as intermediaries throughout the hiring process.

  1. Sourcing Candidates

    • In the age of the Internet, staffing agencies usually identify viable candidates through a search of online job boards, both general and niche-based, and perusal of résumés on networking sites, such as LinkedIn.

    Resume Review

    • Once viable candidates are identified, the agency then scans their résumés for compatibility with the main duties and responsibilities of the client position.

    Telephone Screening

    • When it looks like there might be a match between a candidate and a position, a recruiter will call the candidate for an initial telephone screening. This screening call serves two purposes: to ensure that the answers the candidate provides during the telephone interview match what is indicated on his résumé, and to ensure that his experience is fulfills the needs of the open position.

    In-person Meeting

    • If a candidate passes the initial telephone screening, he is invited to a face-to-face meeting with the recruiter, where his background is reviewed in greater depth. He may also be asked to take a series of skills or personality tests.

    Company Interview

    • When the recruiter believes a good match has been found, he refers the candidate to the hiring manager of the company for further interviews. The recruiter will follow up with both sides after the interview.

    Offer Negotiation

    • Many times an offer is not immediately accepted by a candidate, usually due to monetary differences. The role of the agency is to negotiate between the parties to bring about a resolution acceptable on each end.
