In today's corporate world, "business attire" can mean many things, depending on where you live and the sector in which you work. Holidays can cause even more confusion. Here are some guidelines for what to wear at business holiday functions.

Women

Appropriate holiday business outfits can include slacks and a blouse, a pantsuit, a sweater and skirt or a tasteful dress. Festive jewelry or holiday pins can be added for flair.

Men

A sports coat and slacks or a two-piece suit can be worn; however, a tie is not necessary. A conservative sweater and dark slacks may be appropriate.

Venue

If your office party is taking place at a high-end restaurant or similar location, keep that in mind while choosing your outfit. When in doubt, err on the conservative side. Conversely, if the event is held at a more casual venue, such as a mid-range restaurant or even a bowling alley, feel free to dress down a bit more than you would at work.

What Not to Wear

Common sense dictates that shorts, flip-flops, tank tops, revealing outfits and T-shirts with potentially offensive images or statements should not be worn at office holiday parties. You may offend your hosts and could be the talk of the office the next day.

Celebrate

The holidays are a time for celebration. Make sure you look your best—at work and wherever you go. You'll not only feel good about your appearance, but you'll also spread a little holiday cheer.
