Tight Hamstrings & Back Pain

Tight Hamstrings & Back Pain thumbnail
Tight hamstrings are a common cause of lower back pain

Tight hamstrings can cause back pain, especially in the lower back. Many people overlook their hamstrings when troubleshooting back pain, so it's good to keep in mind that your back problems may start in your legs.

  1. Cause

    • Many factors can contribute to tight hamstrings, such as genetics or a lack of stretching exercises. Athletes who don't stretch well before physical exertion are prone to tight hamstrings.

    Complications

    • Tight hamstrings pull on the pelvic bone, which strains back muscles and causes pain. Having tight hamstrings can also lead to joint problems and a reduction in movement.

    Stretching

    • Stretching your hamstrings is the best way to loosen them. Try to stretch your muscles after a warm-up exercise. Seek out dedicated hamstring stretches and add them to your exercise routine two or three times a week.

    Massage

    • Getting a sports massage on your legs and hips can loosen your hamstrings and provide relief for your lower back.

    Strengthening

    • Prevent back pain by keeping your hamstrings strong. Squats and lunges target your hamstrings, giving them the power they need to protect your back.
