Improving brain function will always be a worthwhile quest for scientists and researchers. And to date, there are several technologies that seem to have a profound impact on brain activity. Some of these technologies are: neurofeedback, computer use, laser light technology, sound wave technology and brain stimulation.

It seems that surfing the Internet may be just what the doctor ordered to improve brain function in adults. Dr. Gary Small, professor at the University of California in Los Angeles, has uncovered that Internet searching heightens brain activity. It seems to "enhances brain circuitry" or develop more connections that enhance memory and function.

According to scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, laser light stimulation can affect human brain activity. This stimulation of specific proteins in the brain can relieve some unpleasant neurological symptoms like those caused by epilepsy (seizure disorder) and Parkinson's disease (causes tremors and affected movement).

You can communicate with the brain through sound waves of specific frequencies by using headphones. One ear listens to a certain frequency while the other ear hears a different one. Because of this technique, what is heard is in between the two original sounds (a binurial beat).
The technology was introduced by a biophysicist named Gerald Oster. It supposedly balances both brain hemispheres and creates a state of concentration and focus that is similar to what you might experience when you have a creative insight, stellar athletic performance or your "best" presentation at work.

By making a person aware of his brain wave patterns, he can learn to control or change behaviors. This in turn can affect brain wave patterns and reduce anxiety or stress.

For a patient suffering from migraines, the insertion of a "brain pacemaker" can use electrical stimulation to reduce symptoms. Dr. Paresh Doshi, a neurosurgeon, did exactly that with one of his patients to relieve migraine symptoms. A similar technology using magnetic impulses can also effect the brain's electrical activity and may help stroke victims according to Businessworld's website.
