Restrictions on Packages to APO Addresses

Restrictions on Packages to APO Addresses thumbnail
"APO" stands for Army Post Office.

According to the Military Postal Service Agency (MPSA), the agency tasked with handling all mail sent to APO and FPO addresses, their single goal is to provide "postal service to personnel around the world." Items addressed to an APO (Army Post Office) box is mail intended for service members stationed at Army or Air Force bases outside of the Continental United States (OCONUS). The MPSA maintains both general restrictions and restrictions specific to geographic location that must be adhered to when sending APO mail to service members.

  1. Weight Restrictions

    • Items being shipped to an APO address cannot weigh more than 70 pounds. (This weight restriction may be less at some locations).

    Size Restrictions

    • APO packages must not exceed 130 inches combined length and girth measurement. In other words, if your package is 75 inches in length and 65 inches measured around, this would be a total combined measurement of 140 inches, making it ineligible for shipment via APO.

    Shipment Method

    • APO packages can only be sent via the Unites States Postal Service.

Hand Delivery to the Post Office Required

    • The U.S. Postal Service has a rule in place that makes it mandatory that packages sent by APO must be hand-delivered.

    Prohibited Items

    • Items prohibited from shipment via APO include: perishable foods, alcohol, firearms and other hazardous items.

    Restrictions Specific to Location

    • In addition to the listed restrictions, each five-digit APO ZIP code may have additional restrictions specific to the particular base location. For example, items such as pork or pork by-products, pornographic, sexual or political material or bulk quantities of non-Islamic religious material is prohibited from shipment by APO to service members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Contact the U.S. Postal Service on 1-800-ASK-USPS or talk to a customer service representative at your local post office to find out about the specific restrictions associated with a particular APO ZIP code or try searching the APO/FPO Shipping ZIP Code Restriction Database (see Resources section).
