What Do I Need to Take in High School to Become an Engineer?

You need a bachelor's degree in engineering to become an engineer. (See References 1) However, there are high school classes that pave the way for the college engineering curriculum.

  1. Math

    • College engineering students begin their math coursework with calculus, which requires a solid foundation in algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

    Physics, Chemistry and Biology

    • High school classes in physics and chemistry expose students to essential concepts that will assist in the required physics and chemistry college courses. Biology is not required for all types of engineering, but certain types of engineering, such as biomedical, require extensive coursework in biology.

    Computer Science

    • Computer science not only introduces students to the fundamentals of software design, but also teaches logic skills.

    English

    • Good communication skills are essential when developing solutions to meet specifications.

    Drafting

    • An understanding of drafting aids in designing and reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and part specifications.

    AP Classes

    • Advanced Placement (AP) classes in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics benefit high school students by teaching them college curriculum. Many colleges accept AP scores as credit toward degree requirements. (See References 2)
