HDTV Information: Plasma vs. LCD

High-definition television (HDTV) boasts lifelike color and high-resolution images in space-saving flat screens--which can measure up to 65 inches diagonally. Two HDTV technologies are popular: plasma and liquid crystal display (LCD).

  1. Size

    • Plasma sets are thicker and use up more energy than similarly-sized LCDs.

    Motion Blur

    • Unlike plasma, an LCD can blur edges and distort images during the fast action of sporting events or video games. You can minimize this effect by buying frequencies at 120Hz or higher.

    Burn-in

    • Static images--such as station logos--that remain on the screen for too long, can permanently appear as a ghost images on plasmas. Screen savers can prevent this problem.

    Brightness

    • The brighter picture of LCDs works well in family rooms or other environments with ordinary lights. Plasma images require a darker room for the best results.

    Black

    • Plasma sets display sharper contrasts and deeper blacks than LCDs. However, the LED backlighting on the latest LCDs can intensify black levels.
