Word processing is the use of computers to write and edit text, forming it into a whole written piece. Different types of word processing equipment focus on different parts of the writing process.

On larger shared systems, word processing is dealt with in individual pieces such as layout commands, text formatting and printing. In personal computers, word processing programs incorporate all jobs.
Word Processor

A word processor formats text as you type, requiring no further editing. Popular examples include Microsoft Word and Corel's WordPerfect. Microsoft Word comes as part of Microsoft Office Suite or individually. Macintosh computers do not come with word processing software, but Microsoft Word is Macintosh compatible.

Text formatting automatically adjusts the layout for the printed page. The source file must be developed to be viewed and printed. Waterloo SCRIPT program is a popular text formatter.
Typesetting Package

Typesetting package offers control of spacing and formatting. Typesetting is tedious but can give you your exact desired look. PCTeX is one example of a typesetting program.
Document Layout Package

The document layout package is used for large papers or theses. It provides templates for the desired look, including appendix, glossary, index, title page and more. LaTeX is one popular document layout package.
