Most doctors perform anal fissure surgery as an outpatient procedure. Surgery may be performed in a hospital or in an ambulatory surgery center. Sometimes doctors even do the procedure in their offices, depending on the type of anesthesia used. Patients recover quickly and return home shortly after surgery.
General and Regional Anesthesia

Doctors generally perform anal fissure surgery with patients under general or regional anesthesia. With general anesthesia patients are asleep, while with regional anesthesia they are awake but numb from the waist down. Patients must remain in the recovery room for a few hours after the procedure for the anesthesia to wear off.

Local Anesthesia

Occasionally, doctors use local anesthesia. Patients recover much more quickly and are able to leave the doctor’s office shortly after the procedure.
Pain

Pain after anal fissure surgery is usually minimal and is usually no worse than the pain from the fissure itself before surgery. Doctors prescribe pain medication as needed.
Restrictions

Most patients return to normal activities at work and home the day after surgery. Patients should not drive if they are taking narcotic pain medications.
