Everyone experiences some type of conflict at work from time to time. Knowing how to resolve these conflicts and manage the pressure that is sometimes present in the workplace is not only important for day-to-day operations, but can contribute to career advancement as well.

  1. Main Sources of Conflict

    • Miscommunication is a common reason for workplace conflict. Some individuals are comfortable voicing their concerns at company meetings or private conversations, while other employees will not verbalize their dissatisfaction, but will display it in other ways (i.e. showing up late, not completing assignments on time).

    Other Reasons for Conflict or Pressure

    • When a group of employees has varying values, each team member will have a different set of priorities when it comes to finishing projects or marketing products. A workplace that includes employees with similar career goals and morals will help to decrease these conflicts, and make everyone feel less pressured to do this in favor of the majority.

    Addressing the Conflict

    • The role that you play in the workplace will usually determine how you should address the conflict. As a manager or corporate executive, it may be up to you to schedule a meeting with your team to resolve workplace issues—as an employee, you may need to set up a time to meet with your boss privately.

    Resolving the Conflict

    • As a manager, stating clearly why you want the conflict resolved will give employees a definite reason for improving workplace conditions. Coming up with a resolution face to face with employees also shows they are committed to making the workplace better.

    Solutions

    • A number of methods can be used to solve the conflict. A sales team may benefit from having competitions, since the reward will be given to the worker who deserves it, which can prevent further conflict. Some companies may also implement a method that involves compromise, so all parties get part of what they want while working with others.
