Allergies: Mold Allergy and Skin Allergy Treatment

Experiencing allergy attacks whenever the seasons change is a classic sign of mold allergy. The symptoms of mold allergy include sneezing, itching, nasal discharge, congestion and dry, scaling skin. Allergy symptoms may last the entire summer because of outdoor molds or all year round if symptoms are due to indoor molds.

  1. Molds on Skin

    • People who have a mold allergy may also experience skin allergy or allergic contact. During an attack, symptoms such as rashes, scaling of the skin or hives may be experienced.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

    • The doctor takes the patient’s complete medical history, performs a physical examination and conducts skin tests during which extracts of different types of fungi are used to scratch or prick the skin. If an allergy is suggested in the test results, mold allergy treatment and medication immediately follows.

    Antihistamines

    • Antihistamines are prescribed to reduce sneezing, runny nose and itchiness caused by the allergy.

    Decongestants

    • Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine is used to temporarily relieve a stuffy nose caused by an allergy. These drugs should be used only for a short time (i.e., no more than three days).

    Nasal Sprays

    • Nasal steroid spray is recommended to reduce the reaction of the nasal tissues to inhaled allergens like mold spores. Cromylyn sodium is a kind of nasal spray that is available without prescription.

    Skin Allergy Relief

    • Skin allergy symptoms can easily be remedied with topical steroids, hydrocortisone and tacrolimus or with pimecrolimus non-steroidal creams.
