Your brain produces the substance dopamine. In order for your body to function properly, you must have normal levels. Excessive amounts of dopamine may result in destructive behavior.

Function

Addiction

Because dopamine release makes us feel good, it reinforces certain behavior, good as well bad. "The problem is behavior that shouldn't be repeated also releases dopamine," the Miami Herald reports. Repeated exposure to drugs such as cocaine, nicotine and amphetamine will result in increased levels of dopamine, which makes you addicted to such drugs.

Digestive Tract Problems

Psychosis

Too much dopamine in your system may lead to psychotic behavior such as schizophrenia and paranoia. It may also inhibit social interaction.

Excessive dopamine levels also have benefits. "Excessive dopamine into the frontal lobe lessens pain and increases pleasure," according to Vitamins-Supplement.org.
