Tear Stains in Beagles

Tear Stains in Beagles thumbnail
Tear staining is a common problem with most dogs.

Beagles, like many other breeds, are afflicted with the common problem of eye staining---the brown or reddish pigment found below the eyes. The staining is caused by the reaction of excess clear tears and normal bacteria in the beagle's hair and skin.

  1. Background

    • Tear staining on a beagle is caused by excessive tearing, diet, fleas and genetics.

    Prevention

    • Daily maintenance of your animal's eyes helps control tear staining and promotes eye health. Keep the region around the eyes clean and trimmed, and consult your veterinarian if you think your animal has an eye infection.

    Bacteria

    • When a dog's face gets wet from excessive tearing, bacteria and yeast grow. The most common infection is ptyrosporin, or red yeast, which causes dark reddish-brown stains.

    Infections

    • A low-grade eye infection in the beagle's tear ducts can cause excessive tearing and staining. An ear infection also can cause increased tearing and staining.

    Irritations

    • Controlling or removing irritants, such as allergies or hair, helps eliminate excessive tearing. Remove hair around the face to prevent irritation or infection.
