Poodles & Tear Stains

Keep your poodle healthy with daily eye care.

It is a common problem for poodles to get brown or pinkish stains on the hair just below the inside corner of the eyes. The reaction of clear tears with the normal bacteria in the poodle's hair and skin causes the staining problem.

  1. Birth Defect

    • Some birth defects, such as an abnormal drainage system or the eyelids turning inward and blocking tear duct drainage, cause tear stains. Both defects are surgically correctable.

    Hair

    • A poodle's hair draws the tears out of the eye like a wick. Remove hair to correct this problem.

    Irritants

    • Irritants, such as particulates, allergies or an eyelash, increase tear formation and cause staining.

    Inflammation and Ulcers

    • Eye problems, including inflammation or ulcers, are not only painful, but increase tear production and cause tear stains. See your veterinarian immediately if you detect any problems with your poodle's eyes.

    Other Problems

    • The accumulation of tears in the dog's facial hair leads to matting, skin irritations and possible infections. To promote eye heath, carefully trim the hair below the eyes and keep the area around the eye clean.

    Treatment

    • Some products available to remove the brown stains cause irritation to the eye. These products should never be used directly in the eye. Follow instructions carefully, protecting your animal with an ophthalmic ointment to the eye before treatment, if necessary.
