What Is Herbicide Application?

Herbicide application is the use of chemical agents to kill off unwanted trees, weeds and grasses on land, according to Louisiana State University. These undesirable growths can affect yield and growth of desired plants.

  1. Chemicals

    • Some chemicals penetrate undesirable plants' root systems after rainfall. Others are absorbed by or injected into stumps or bark.

    Equipment

    • Keep spare equipment, parts and a first-aid kit handy whenever applying herbicide. You will also need soap, rubber gloves, safety goggles, mixing containers and towels.

    Types

    • Granular herbicides are dropped into the soil by hand or with a custom spreader. Sprayers can cover areas large or small with chemical herbicides.

    Maintenance

    • Inspect your application tools often. Loose or missing parts could cause you to waste expensive chemicals, according to Louisiana State University.

    Safety

    • Herbicides are safe to humans when applied and handled properly. Many of these chemicals are not toxic to humans.
