Why Does My New Puppy Whine So Much?

Your puppy's whining could be due to many factors.

Puppies cry for many reasons. As your new puppy adjusts to your home, it will be important for you to understand the different reasons it is crying. Your puppy may whine to let you know that it needs something, such as food, but it may also whine due to behavioral issues.

Hunger

A puppy may cry because it is hungry. While it was with its mother, the puppy may have whined to signal that it needed to eat.

Discomfort

A puppy that is cold, hot, tired or uncomfortable in some way may whine.

Illness

A puppy that is not feeling well may whine. If you believe your puppy is sick or in pain, seek veterinary attention right away.

Frustration

Some puppies whine because they are bored, lonely or frustrated in some way, even if they just can't reach a toy that they want.

Separation Anxiety

A puppy that has separation anxiety will often whine when it is separated from its owner, and will become anxious.

Manipulation

Puppies can learn that whining gets them attention and other things that they want, so their whining may be a learned behavior (especially if you give in to them frequently).
