Why Do Hair Serums Ruin Irons?

Hair serums themselves don't ruin hair irons. In fact, serum helps your hair, but a cheap iron can ruin it. Low-quality flat irons are prone to wearing and peeling because they weren't made with enough layers of coating to withstand the heat and use you put it through. Non-coated plates may become dull if the material is low-grade as well. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Significance

    • Flat irons have become a common household appliance for many women who want to temporarily straighten curls or tame frizz. Hundreds of flat irons and corresponding products on the market claim to optimize hair's condition. Buzzwords such as "ionic", "ceramic", "nano", "tourmaline" and "titanium" can all be tricky to decipher and may cause you to make a bad purchase.

    Ceramic irons

    • Ceramic irons are the most popular irons today because of their ability to smooth hair as they straighten. Hair glides effortlessly between ceramic coated plates so there is minimal pulling or friction on the hair shaft. Ceramic irons may consist of 100 pure ceramic plates, layers of ceramic covering metal (usually aluminum) plates, or nano-ceramic technology, in which only tiny ceramic particles cover the plates.

    Identification

    • You may notice your iron isn't heating up as evenly as it once did, it's not straightening your hair as evenly or your hair gets snagged between the plates. With ceramic irons, this is often due to bald spots on the plates in which ceramic is peeling, chipping or wearing out. Product build up from serums, leave in conditioners and other styling products get baked onto the plates, impairing its ability to distribute heat properly and glide through hair.

    Serums

    • Serums contain silicones for coating the hair shaft and alcohols. Although this serum buildup may contribute to heat depletion and snagging, serum alone will only partially contribute to a low-quality iron's demise. That's because the ceramic on cheap irons isn't enough to withstand the high heat temperature and friction you put it through, so it comes off.

    Cleaning

    • Problems will arise with any iron, ceramic or metal plated, expensive or not, if it's not well-maintained. Cleaning irons by hand is necessary to keep an iron working it's best. You can either purchase an iron cleaning solution or just use water and a towel regularly to clean off serum and product residues.
