Congestion in a Pug

Congestion in a Pug thumbnail
Pugs are a popular breed.

Pugs are a popular breed of dog known for being affectionate, playful and kind; however, due to their peculiar breeding, pugs are prone to health problems such as breathing problems, overheating and ear infections.

  1. Significance

    • Because pugs have extremely short snouts, they are more prone to infections that cause congestion than most other dog breeds. Like humans, pugs can contract the common cold and become congested.

    Identification

    • According to PugWorld.com, a pug's nose should be moist at all times. When it becomes congested it can become dry and cracked. The application of Vaseline can help remedy this condition.

    Considerations

    • Pugs are also susceptible to heat. If a pug is left in hot conditions, he can become congested and overheated.

    Features

    • It is normal for a pug to make snorting noises when he breathes. These noises are not the sign of congestion, but trademarks of the pug breed.

    Warning

    • A collapsed trachea is a severe condition inherent in some pugs. This is a birth defect where the cartilage in the wind pipe collapses. Symptoms of this condition are a hoarse cough and congestion.
