What Is the Code of Ethics for a Health-Care Administrator?

Health-care administrators have a strict code of ethics to follow.

The code of ethics for health-care administrators was put forth by the American College of Healthcare Executives and was last amended on March 16th, 2007. It outlines how all health-care executives must behave when it comes to their professional relationships with patients, colleagues and any other person that they serve within their profession.

Professional Ethics

The code of ethics for a health-care administrator or executive declares that he must always be honest and respectful to his colleagues as well as follow all rules and regulations that have been set forth at his place of business. He should never exploit any professional relationships for selfish reasons or do anything that would reflect badly on the health management profession as a whole.

Patients

A health-care administrator cannot allow any discrimination against a patient and cannot allow any practices that may be viewed as discriminatory at her place of business. She must also have systems in place that insure that patients are aware of their rights and any risks involved in the health-care services provided.

Society

The code of ethics must be applied to the general community as well. An administrator is responsible for insuring that his facility meets the needs of the community and is accessible by all. It is important that he provides clear and accurate information to the public, so that they can make informed decisions regarding their personal health and his facility's services.
