Chi flat irons, distributed by Farouk Systems, are one of the most recognized brands for hair straightening in the U.S. The brand credits high quality materials and manufacturing for the pricey hair tools which can run anywhere from $70 for their classic 1-inch iron to over $200 for their 2-inch Turbo Ionic Ceramic Iron. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Nano Technology

    • Nano technology refers to tiny particles in the plates of the flat iron. According to Chi, nano silver particles "eliminate bacteria from appliances and promote a germ-free zone to protect the health and safety of stylists and clients." Though silver does have antibacterial properties, scientific research has yet to prove its efficacy in nano irons.

    Swivel Cord

    • Swivel cords on Chi irons are a convenient and safe feature to have. The cord's ability to swivel 360 degrees in either direction keeps it from tangling and coming unplugged during use. Because you're not distracted by untwisting a messy cord or knocking things over with it, you focus on your hair and straightening technique, which lowers your risk of burning yourself or your hair.

    Storage

    • Chi irons include a heat resistant mat and pouch for setting down and storing the iron. You must always let the iron cool completely, however, before storing it in the pouch or elsewhere, as it could come in contact with flammable products and materials.

    Outlet Safety

    • According to Folica.com, a beauty retailer, Chi irons only work in the U.S. and Canada at 110 voltage. The irons don't work with voltage converters for use in foreign countries, as this will permanently damage the iron and poses the risk of electric shock or fire.

    Recalls

    • In 2007, Farouk recalled thousands of its flat irons due to fire and safety hazards. Consumers were urged to return the $160 irons to the company for a new one because the South Korean manufacturer had installed the on/off switch incorrectly, causing it to remain on when switched off.
