Nose Piercings & Acne Medication

Many people today have nose piercings. Some of these same people also have acne, which they are treating with medications. These medications can have an effect on their nose piercings. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Treat Acne Before Getting Pierced

    • If you already have acne, you should have your acne medically treated prior to getting your nose pierced. Treating your acne before you get your nose pierced will prevent infections from the piercing, and you can show off your new piercing minus the acne.

    Wait Before Piercing

    • Wait until the acne treatment is complete before you go to get pierced. Again, this is to prevent infection. Plus, a piercer does not want to pierce a nose that has an outbreak of acne on it.

    Piercing While Being Treated

    • If you decide to get pierced during a course of acne treatment, you should take extra care to keep the pierced area clean and to finish the treatment cycle for your acne. You can still avoid infection, but it will require more effort because a normal nose piercing is generally performed on a person when he or she is not on medication.

Newly Pierced Nose and New Prescription

    • If you have recently pierced your nose, and your doctor prescribes an acne medication, it’s in your best interest to inform the doctor of your newly pierced nose. At this point, the doctor can ensure that the medication prescribed will not conflict with the healing process for your piercing. Your doctor can also check for any signs of infection from the piercing.

    Talk to Your Piercer

    • If you are considering a nose piercing and are currently on acne medication or could be on acne medication soon, talk to your piercer about your decision. Your piercer can also advise whether the piercing is a good idea at this time or if you should wait until your acne has been properly treated.
