There are several differences between LEDs (light emitting diodes) and halogen light bulbs. Each type of light bulb offers certain advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Lifespan

    • Perhaps one of the biggest differences between LEDs and halogen light bulbs is how long they last. LEDs can last up to 50,000 hours. Halogen light bulbs only last between 2,000 and 6,000 hours.

    How They Work

    • Electricity is used to heat up tungsten filaments in halogen light bulbs. When these tungsten filaments are heated up, light is produced. LED lights produce light by running an arc of electrical current between two electrodes.

    Light Intensity

    • Lumens are used as a measurement of light intensity. Both LEDs and halogen light bulbs are capable of producing an average of around 20 lumens per watt of power drawn.

    Features

    • The only difference between incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs is that halogen bulbs contain a halogen in their fill gas. The halogen helps return evaporated tungsten back to the filament, giving these bulbs a 20 percent longer-rated life than incandescent light bulbs. LEDs are often grouped into clusters to increase their applications.

    Heat

    • Much of the energy drawn in by halogen light bulbs is given off in the form of heat, which is why they are not the most efficient light sources. Eartheasy.com claims that LEDs are a type of “energy-efficient lighting.” They give off very little heat and produce generous amounts of light for the power they draw.
