Facts on the Green Hummingbird

The green violet-ear hummingbird is spotted in the U.S. each summer.

The tiny and charming hummingbird is found only in the Americas. Of the roughly 340 species of hummingbirds, only about 23 kinds have been seen in the United States.

Green Hummingbirds

There are quite a few hummingbirds with green coloration, including the green-breasted mango, the green-crowned brilliant, and the green-backed firecrown.

U.S. Species

Although there have been a few reported sightings of the green-breasted mango in Texas, they are very rare. The green violet-ear has evidenced seasonal movements and has been spotted as far north as Canada.

Green Violet-Ear Habitat

The green violet-ear's normal habitat is the highlands of Mexico, Central America and South America.

U.S. Sightings

Bird watchers have spotted this hummingbird each summer in far-flung and seemingly random locations in the eastern U.S., including Louisiana, Arkansas and North Carolina.

Green Violet-Ear Identification

The sides of its head are a deep violet-blue, while its body is a brilliant deep green. At 4 to 4 1/2 inches in length, it is much larger than the more commonly seen ruby-throated hummingbird.
