Importance of Exhausts in Turbo Cars

The exhaust system is an oft-neglected aspect of a quality vehicle. Without a proper setup in place, the owner of even the best car will not see optimal performance.

  1. Channeling Waste

    • The first function of the exhaust system is channeling waste from the engine. A combustion engine has three major processes: combustion, drive and exhaust. If one of these processes is inefficient, performance will suffer.

    Reduce Noise

    • Noise is a kind of waste produced by an engine, and part of the exhaust system's job is to limit it. This is done partly for aesthetic effect---no one likes a car that sounds like a junker---but it also boosts efficiency.

    Clean Emissions

    • Emissions are harmful to the environment, and part of the exhaust system's job is to clean them. This is done primarily with the catalytic converter, which breaks down harmful compounds into harmless substances.

    Neglect

    • Neglect of an exhaust system will result in an engine running progressively less efficiently over time. The car will also sound worse. Both of these issues lower the resale value and spoil the appeal of owning a turbo car.

    Super-Charged Engines

    • Turbo engines require super-charged exhaust systems. These generally consist of turbo exhaust headers, a wastegate to converge different exhausts together and a thick tailpipe for dispersal.
