Menopause Pill

Menopause brings with it a host of unpleasant symptoms, including hot flashes, insomnia, irritability and depression. Many women are desperate for relief from these symptoms and look for a menopause pill.

  1. Birth Control Pills

    • Birth control pills may be prescribed for relief of hot flashes, irritability and night sweats.

    MHT

    • Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is often prescribed for relief of menopausal symptoms. Formerly called hormone replacement therapy, MHT offers short-term relief for moderate to severe symptoms.

    Non-Hormonal Medications

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, doctors may also recommend non-hormonal medications to prevent or treat osteoporosis. Examples include Boniva, Fosamax and Actonel.

    Relieving Hot Flashes

    • Neurontin is a type of anti-seizure medication that also relieves hot flashes in some women. Low-dose anti-depressants such as Paxil and Zoloft have also been reported to offer some relief for hot flashes.

    Considerations

    • Hormones should be taken for the shortest time possible in the lowest dose because of the risk of side effects. The pill is known to increase the risk of blood clot formation, making it particularly dangerous to women over 35 who smoke. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of each type of menopause treatment.
