Goldfish Pond Fungus

Goldfish, scientifically known as Carassius auratus auratus, are domesticated freshwater fish bred from wild carp. They are kept in fish ponds and aquariums. If the water isn't properly maintained, fungus can develop and sicken goldfish.

  1. Pond Environment

    • Fungal spores exists in ponds that have organic buildup. As water temperatures increase, the likelihood of infections increase.

    Infection

    • Goldfish are vulenerable to infections if they have scale or fin damage. Fungal spores can invades these openings and lead to disease. Goldfish that have survived through the winter in ponds are very susceptible to infection due to a weakened immune system.

    Abnormal Growth

    • A white, fluffy blotch on the scales of the goldfish indicate a fungal disease. It may appear like cotton wool.

    Effects

    • If all the goldfish in the pond suddenly stop behaving normally, have abnormal appetite and don't compete for food, there could be a common pond fungus responsible.

    Remedy

    • A biofilter can improve pond water quality and nitrogen levels should be monitored and brought to normal levels. An anti-fungal solution should be added to the pond to reduce fungal growth.
