What Is Hydrogen Technology?

Hydrogen technology is currently being developed by various federal agencies. This technology is being designed to replace conventional power generators. Fuel cell technology will be the primary method used to make this energy a viable energy source.

  1. Fuel Cells

    • Technology for hydrogen will center on fuel cell technology. The Department of Energy says fuel cells have the capability to provide power in stationary and portable applications and that they have the ability to replace internal combustion engines.

    Hydrogen Production

    • Technology for hydrogen production is being developed from fossil fuels, renewable sources and nuclear energy sources. Coal, natural gas, nuclear power and biomass conversion use various technologies to produce hydrogen power.

    • Manufacturing hydrogen consists of production, delivery and storage. Technological advances must be developed to replace conventional systems to ensure that hydrogen can become a competitive and commercially viable energy source.

    Storage and Delivery

    • Storing and delivering hydrogen is important for fuel cell use and for enabling hydrogen power vehicles to become the next conventional mode of transportation. Commercial hydrogen refueling stations, stationary power facilities and storage facilities must be implemented before a hydrogen-based economy can become a reality.

    Hydrogen Economy

    • The United States began full-scale development for a hydrogen-based economy in 2003. Technology is expected to develop hydrogen vehicles to the point where they will become the primary commercial form of transportation by 2020.
