    Function

    • Typically, one telephone line requires two wires only. Thus a four-strand wire is capable of carrying two phone lines.

    • If you want more than two lines, you will have to use six-strands or higher.

    Gauge

    • Telephone wires are available in 22-gauge, and 24-gauge. The standard is 24 gauge.

    Modular Plugs

    • According to telecom.hellodirect.com, the two common types of modular plugs are RJ-11 and RJ-14. Rj-11 uses two wires from a four-strand wire. This kind is usually used for telephones that are mounted on walls. RJ-11 is a 1-line plug. RJ-14 handles two lines and uses four wires.
