Red wine contains more resveratrol than white wine.

Resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound, is an antioxidant that has been associated with health benefits. It can be beneficial for your heart and may protect you against certain neurological disorders. Resveratrol is found grapes and berries--the fruits most often used to make wine. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • In the case of wine, resveratrol comes from the grape's skin (or the berries for fruit wine). The levels of resveratrol in wine can range from five micromoles to more than 40.

    Color

    • The darker the wine, the more grape skins used in the process and the higher the resveratrol level. This is why red (darker) wine has more resveratrol than white (lighter) wine.

    Types

    • Cornell researcher Leroy Creasy examined concentrations of resveratrol and found levels can vary greatly. Cabernet Sauvignon often had the least resveratrol of the red wines, while Pinot Noir tends to contain the most.

    Location

    • The Creasy study, which was done on 100 wines from the U.S., also found grapes from colder climates have more resveratrol. Oregon and New York wines have been noted as especially having high levels.

    Considerations

    • Some wineries print resveratrol levels on their labels. Even those that do not often have the information available to consumers, so ask if you are interested in the wine with the highest levels.
