What Is the Difference Between a Router and a DSL Modem? thumbnail
A modem is necessary to connect to the Internet.

Modems and routers are used in computer networking. They connect multiple computers or other devices so that they can communicate with one another. Modems are used to connect to the Internet, while routers connect computers or networks to each other. Routers also provide a level of security, while modems do not.

  1. Modem Connection

    • As defined by "PC Magazine," a DSL modem is "a device used to connect a computer to a telephone company digital subscriber line (DSL) service for Internet access." It connects via a telephone line to a telephone jack in the wall. An Ethernet cable then connects directly to a computer or to the router.

    Router Connection

    • The role of the router is to allow many devices to communicate with one another on the same network. There are several ports where Ethernet cables can be plugged into the router. Each of these ports can connect another device to the network.

    Internet

    • In order to connect to the Internet, a modem is required. It transforms the signal it receives into one that the computer understands. A router is not necessary to connect to the Internet.

    Security

    • Most modems do not offer any security against viruses or hackers. However, routers have firewalls that offer some protection against such threats.

    Models

    • Each Internet service provider (ISP) usually offers just one type of modem to its customers. However, there are many types of routers available for purchase. Some routers are wireless, have more ports, or are more secure than others.
