Keeping a well-functioning household is part of home economics and technology instruction.

Home economics and technology instruction, also known in some states as Home Economics Careers and Technology Education (HECT), teaches students the basics of running a household in the 21st century. Areas of focus are child development, family health, food sciences, consumer education, and housing and furnishing.

  1. Child Development

    • HECT instructs on child-rearing and education and teaching techniques, including an understanding of how to adapt your instruction methods to your child's needs. The newest research on reading and mathematics fundamentals is explored.

    Family Health

    • Planning a variety of healthy meals for a family is part of HECT. In addition, instruction is given on understanding medicines, supplements and child allergies.

    Food Sciences

    • HECT helps students understand new cooking techniques, developments in food preparation and the new processed foods that are constantly available to consumers.

    Consumer Education

    • HECT prepares students to be wise consumers by teaching them to understand credit, product research and how to avoid fraudulent products.

    Housing And Furnishing

    • Keeping a nice household with affordable and practical materials is also a part of HECT. Students learn home safety, livability and cleanliness.
