Why Renters Submit Insurance Claims

Renters insurance is an inexpensive way for tenants to protect their belongings in the event of a loss. There are a variety of reasons why a renter might submit a claim to his or her insurance company.

  1. Theft

    • Whether the theft occurs during a burglary or a cocktail party, renters are likely to report theft claims to recover stolen property. These losses can include stolen jewelry, cash or other valuable items.

    Property Damage

    • While most insurance policies exclude damage caused by the insured, renters may still file a claim if their personal property is damaged or destroyed by someone else. Personal property can include clothing, electronics, furniture and even appliances.

    Liability

    • Renters often file claims to indemnify those who are injured in their homes. Liability coverage can also be used to repair or replace the property of others when damaged by a policyholder.

    Fire

    • Renters may file claims to repair or replace property damaged in a fire. Consumers should know that insurance companies will strongly consider the source of the fire when choosing whether to pay a fire damage claim.

    Natural Disasters

    • Many insurance companies exclude natural disasters, or "acts of God," from the list of covered perils under a renter's insurance policy. However, there are companies that will cover claims for flood or wind damage when filed by a policyholder.
