What Is Liquid Detergent Made Out Of?

We use laundry detergent to keep our linens clean, fresh and looking new. It adds softness and fragrance, removes stains, even brightens whites. You know what detergent does, but do you know what ingredients it contains? Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Surfactants

    • Surfectants are added to detergent because they attach to grease, fat or oil-based stains, breaking them up and allowing water to wash them away.

    Builders

    • Builders soften water, help surfactants work more efficiently and suspend particles of dirt in the wash water so that they can be rinsed away.

    Enzymes

    • Enzymes break down stains so that the other detergent ingredients can grab them and wash them away.

    Colorants and Fragrance

    • Colorants and fragrance make a product unique and set it apart from other brands or even other products in the same line. These ingredients are optional and are only to enhance the product's appeal. Unscented and uncolored versions are usually available.

    Bleach

    • Oxygen bleach is added to many detergents. It is safe for both whites and colors, and improves the way they look by brightening fabrics to make them look fresh and new.
