What Are the Dangers of Using Too Many Electric Space Heaters?

Electric space heaters can serve as supplemental heat when a central furnace is broken, or they can be used to selectively heat only parts of your home. However, relying on too many electric heaters can be costly and even dangerous.

Wattage and Current

Most electric heaters, on a high setting, draw up to 1,500 watts. On a standard household 120-volt circuit, that means a single heater can pull up to 12.5 amperes of current.

Household Wiring

Circuits in most homes are rated for either 15 or 20 amps, meaning two space heaters could easily overload a single circuit and blow a fuse or trip the circuit breaker.

Cords

When using multiple space heaters, ensure each is plugged directly into the wall socket. Never use a household extension cord with an electric heater.

Fire Safety

Though most heaters on the market have multiple safety features, space heaters are still the cause of thousands of fires every year. Never leave space heaters running unattended, and ensure adequate space around them to prevent ignition of fabrics or paper.

Costs

The high-current demands of electric heaters can add to your power bill, especially when using multiple heaters at the same time. Only heat rooms which are in use to help save money.
